Happy news

I already posted this on this blog’s Facebook page, but I thought I’d write about it here in greater detail.  I’ve been biking a fair amount lately, now that my work schedule has returned to something resembling normalcy.  The weather has been great recently, a few days of rain notwithstanding, and I thoroughly love the autumn temperatures, whether I’m on my bike or not.  Anyway, today I biked from home to campus in the morning and back again in the afternoon with no incidents.  Traffic was light, and the weather was perfect.

This evening I had a meeting to attend at Grace St. Luke’s Church, so I left home around 5:40 PM and began my bike ride.  As I was biking west on Young Avenue, I was approaching a parked car in the far right lane, where I was biking.  At the same time, a car was approaching from the rear on my left hand side.  As I neared the parked car and the passing car approached me, I wondered if I would have time to pass the parked car before I myself was passed.  I probably wouldn’t have had time to do so, but it didn’t matter, because the passing car slowed just as I was approaching the parked car, allowing me to safely pass it and return to the far right lane.  I was pleasantly surprised and waved my thanks.

And then, it happened again, on Belvedere, as I was heading north to GSL.  I was approaching a parked car when a car, soon to pass me, slowed and allowed me to safely pass the parked car.  I know we’ve all had close calls in traffic, whether it be while passing a car or being passed, and we’ve all had a driver or two extend the hand of courtesy.  But twice in one day?  This is unprecedented, my people, and quite welcome.  Are Memphis drivers becoming used to cyclists and learning to share the road?  Let’s all hope so.

Speaking of good news, hopefully you’ve heard about the Hampline.  It’s a two mile, on-road, multi-use trail that will connect the Shelby Farms Greenline to Overton Park.  Making this connection safe and protected for cyclists and other travelers will do a lot to strengthen the routes between east Memphis and the ‘burbs to Midtown, Downtown, and other points west.  The Hampline is partially crowd-funded, so you have an opportunity to support this unique project with your resources.  The goal is to raise $75,000, of which around $12,500 has been raised so far.  I will definitely kick in some cheddar to support this crucial and innovative improvement in our cycling infrastructure, and I hope you will too.  Special thanks to the Hightailers for matching contributions earlier in the campaign.

Also, the good people at the Peddler Bike Shop are sponsoring a Traffic Skills 101 class on Saturday, November 2.  It’s geared (pun intended) for new or potential cyclists.  The class costs $50 and is limited to 10 people, so register now!

Lastly, this has very little to do with cycling per se, but it sounds really cool, so I thought I’d share.  It’s called the “I Wish You Well” Wall, and it’s happening tomorrow at Overton Square.  The idea is that people will write a message of encouragement or something like that and leave it on the wall next to Bar Louie.  (See the event page for more information.)  I’m not usually one for public displays of positivity – perhaps it’s because I’m an economist, or because of my Scottish heritage – but this event sounds like something Memphis could use.  I’m going to visit and contribute my note, biking-related no doubt.

End of the week links

Hi everyone.  I wanted to share a few links and news items on this lovely Sunday afternoon.

First, you will never catch me sporting one of these (although my 11-year-old self has already asked for one for Christmas).  It reminds me of the whistle tip phenomenon of ten years ago.

Second, grab your spare parts and unneeded gear.  Memphis is having another bike swap meet.  This one is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at Minglewood Hall on Madison, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Admission is $5, and there will be beer.  Those of you with long memories of Memphis cycling remember the swap meets of a few years ago.  I went to the last one.  It was great.  That’s where I bought these beauties.

The University of Memphis Tiger Bikes bike share program is almost ready to launch.  I think I’ve posted about this before; can’t remember though.  Anyway, my friend and colleague Amelia Mayahi and I have been working on this project for around two years.  The bikes, 55 of them, are all assembled and waiting to be ridden.  We’re still waiting on a few last details to be taken care of before students can begin using the bikes.  I’m really excited for this program to take off and to see more students biking around campus.  Special thanks to the good people at the Peddler Bike Shop for supplying the bikes and invaluable assistance.

More good biking news for Memphis: we’re hosting the Tennessee Bike Summit!  It’s going down May 22 – May 24 at Rhodes College.  This will be a great opportunity to highlight all the positive changes that have been happening in local cycling, and in other cities across the state.  Registration opens March 1.

Speaking of fixies, I’ve never owned one or even ridden one, but after seeing Premium Rush this weekend, I am sooooo tempted to buy one.  The movie itself is pretty good; not the best movie I’ve ever seen, but full of ridiculously fun biking.  Two thumbs up.

Finally, I found this tumblr just recently.  It’s not biking related, but it is a celebration of all things Memphis, which is good enough to post here.  Fuck yeah Memphis indeed!

Bike racks on Madison

Hey everyone.  This link is a little too long to share on facebook (just click on it and you’ll see why), but I wanted to share the following good news from the Mid-South Regional Design Center.  It looks like Madison Avenue is getting some free bike racks – 25 of them, to be precise.  This is great news for anyone, like me, who’s biked somewhere on Madison and then found themselves scouting a sign post or tree in the absence of a proper rack.

The good people at the Peddler Bike Shop are donating three racks, the rest coming from the city.  I’m really excited about this.  It’s one thing to have bike lanes or sharrows, but to really be a bike-friendly city, we need to mind the details, like the end-to-end concerns potential and current cyclists might have.  Parking is inevitably one of those concerns, and the more bike parking we have, the more biking we should see.  Which is good for all of us.

Success

I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped make Bike-to-Campus Day a success.  Ty and Cort – thanks for helping me publicize the event.  Thanks to all the Memphis bike shops who displayed posters: Victory Bicycle Studio, the Peddler Bike Shop, Outdoors Inc., and Midtown Bike Company.  And a special thanks to the Peddler for donating the water bottles.  They were a big hit.

Spreading the word

I had a proper biking adventure over the past few days.  The goal: to deliver posters to the four bike shops in in-town Memphis to spread the word about Bike-to-Campus Day, which is next week.  Here’s what happened.

On Saturday I biked from home to campus to pick up the posters.  I then biked to the Peddler on Highland to deliver my first set of posters.  There I ran into Cort and we chatted for a minute before I headed off to my next destination: Outdoors Incorporated on Union.

I caught a lucky light at Belvedere and Union and was able to (hurriedly) bike east on Union for half a block before I turned into the parking lot.  I dropped off another set of posters before heading off again to my next (and final) destination of the day: Otherlands Coffee Bar on Cooper.

There I dropped off my last two sets of posters for the day.  I had hoped to make it downtown to Midtown Bike Company and to Victory Bicycle Studio in my neighborhood that day, but I ran out of time.

I took care of the first of those two errands this morning.  Around 9:30 this morning I headed east on Southern toward downtown, arriving at Midtown Bikes around 10:00 AM.  I left two posters with Daniel, the owner, and then biked to campus for a day at the office.  I was going to leave two posters at Victory this afternoon but forgot that they are closed on Monday.  Boo, my memory.  I’ll hit them up on Wednesday.

Altogether I logged 28.3 miles on my bike in just over two hours.  Traffic was generally very manageable and I had only one close call.  Yes, cars should yield the right-of-way to bikes when leaving a stop sign.  Otherwise, skidding might happen.  Just sayin’.

Rides so far this week

I’ve biked two days this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, as I elected to work from home Monday and today.  (BTW, these days are soon to come to an end – classes start next week.)  It’s been a pretty uneventful week thus far although I have had some fun experiences.

Tuesday … wait, actually I worked from home Tuesday as well.  But I had a meeting that afternoon with our local insurance guy about … life insurance.  Gawd.  Just writing that makes me feel old.  But, given the fact that if either my wife or I died, leaving the other to fend for him/herself, the surviving spouse would be pretty much fucked financially, we decided it was a good idea to get insured.  Also, I’m getting disability insurance, in case something bad happens to me while biking.  (And the Oscar for most depressing blog post goes to … )

After an hour or so of listening to the fine points of term life, whole life, universal life, and other things I promptly forgot, I stopped by the house for a minute before heading to the University district for the Peddler’s Tuesday night ride.  I hadn’t ridden one in a long time, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long.  The main reason for my participation was that a friend of mine is considering buying a bike, so I took him to the Peddler to shop for one.  He found a really beautiful bike for not that much; can’t remember the model though.  He had fun on the ride but was rather exhausted by the time we returned.

The best part of the ride was a family of two parents with three kids, two boys and a girl.  The girl slept in a trailer her parents pulled for most of the ride – she was maybe two years old – but her brothers rode the entire distance to Overton Park and most of the way back.  And they were maybe four and six.  Seriously.  They were flying.  It was awesome.

Wednesday I was in meetings most of the day, but I biked to work and then home nonetheless.  I felt really crappy when I got home, allergies maybe, so I had to bail on a dinner with friends.  But the ride was fun at least.  Here’s a map.

I had to run an errand at Poplar Plaza, hence the funny route home.

So, Tuesday’s ride was 17.4 miles and Wednesday’s was 9.11.  Not bad for a slow week.  I’m sure cycling and writing will pick up next week, when I’ll have to go to the office almost every day.  Seriously.  I know.

A new record

Today, like so many lately, was a really great day to bike.  A bit chilly this morning, but once the day warmed up the weather was positively gorgeous.  I biked to school this morning then rode with the Tuesday night crowd at the Peddler. We followed the standard Tuesday night route: from the bike shop to Overton Park and back.  I ducked out at the end to head home and get some work done (which I am clearly not doing now).

But the record in question was not my travel distance today: about 11 miles.  A good ride, but nothing record-shattering.  No, the record in question is that today I broke the record for most visits to my blog.  The previous record, 60, was set yesterday, and today I had a grand total of 61 visits.  Hooray for shameless self-promotion!

Without going into too much detail, I think my readership will be increasing markedly in the near future.  You’ll have to wait and see what I mean until it happens though.  In the meantime, please leave a comment if you feel inclined.  I hope I see you biking in Memphis in the near future.

Tweed Ride!

I normally avoid leaving my house on three days (nights, more accurately) each year: New Year’s Eve, Cinco de Mayo, and St. Patrick’s Day.  Why, you might ask?  Because those are the three nights each year when the people who never go out decide that they are going to go out and party like rock stars.  And it’s never a pretty sight.  The hats.  Tiaras. Costumes.  Regrettable pictures.

But this year I’m breaking with tradition and going out on St. Patty’s Day.  Not only that, I’m going to an Irish pub: the newly opened (and hopefully bike friendly) Dublin House on Madison.  What could compel me to actually set foot in an Irish bar on fucking St. Patrick’s Day?

The Tweed Ride, bishes.  It leaves from the Peddler at 6:00 PM, heads over to the Dublin House, and concludes around 9.  Put on your finest tweeds and argyles and head on over.

Tour de Cure Kick-Off Celebration

Forgot to mention this before – there’s a kick-off party for the 2011 American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure at the Peddler Bike Shop on Thursday, 17 February from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.  (There’s a tiny flier advertising the event on the Peddler’s home page.)  RSVP by emailing dcain_at_diabetes.org.  I’m planning to go even though it’s pretty unlikely that I’ll participate in the ride.
