As a relatively new cyclist, I don’t have much in the way of extraneous biking schwag. Â I own exactly one bicycle, and with the exception of a couple of extra inner-tubes and some mountain bike tires I’ve never used – they came with my bike – I can fit all of my extra parts and pieces into a box about twice as wide as a standard shoe box. Â I do have some unused gear, most notably a handlebar mirror that for the life of me I could never install properly. Â The rubber cuffs that came with the mirror never quite fit right. Â It was classic Goldilocks: one was too big, the other too small, but unfortunately none of them were just right. Â As a result, the mirror never stayed and would fall off the handlebars at the least opportune moments. Â Like when I was biking. Â Down a busy street. Â And really needed a rearview mirror. Â Like seriously.
So with that in mind I went by the Bicycle Swap Meet today and was really impressed. Â I didn’t really know what to expect; I imagine a yard-sale format, with various parts and pieces spread out on blankets and tables in some parking lot. Â Well, there were lots of parts and pieces spread out on blankets and tables (or sometimes piled into bins and boxes), but it was inside, which was good, as the weather today was rather chilly.
There were around six vendors selling their wares at the swap meet. Â Mostly it was local cycling enthusiasts selling the extra schwag they had accumulated over years of riding, but holy crap did these guys have some gear! Â I’m talking boxes full of racing jerseys, hats, and gloves, not to mention all manner of bike hardware. Â One could easily have built an entire bike, if not several, from the spare parts offered for sale. Â And in fact there were several fully furnished bikes for sale. Â I held off on buying bike number two, but I did pick up a few new toys, including a water bottle rack (which I’ve been wanting/needing some for some time), a light that I can clip onto the strap of my messenger bag, plus these bad boys. Â Feast your eyes, dear readers:
That’s right. Â Dolla’ sign valve stem covers. Â All I can say is: awwwwww yeeeaaaaaaah.
Here’s a few more shots from the swap meet. Â I’m already looking forward to the next one.
